Cozumel beaches

I have been told that the nice beaches are at the other side of the island, but I don't drive/scooter. : What are the beaches like in the WEST side of the island? : If the answer is not very encouraging, how are the beaches like across the water in Playa del Carmen? : Thank you : Sus
